Natural Cleaning DIYs
There always comes a point in winter where the house starts to feel... closed up.
The windows stay shut, the heater's on more often, and even though everything's clean, the house doesn't always feel fresh.
When I notice that, I don't deep clean the whole house.
I do a quick reset instead.
• Lemon + Purification in the diffuser
• Thieves Household Cleaner for benches, tables, and the high-touch surfaces we use every day
• Clean the windows and place a bowl of pink Himalayan salt and few drops of thieves EO & Oregano EO. To help soak up the condensation and keep mould at bay.
It only takes a few minutes, but it completely changes how the house feels.
I've found it's often not about cleaning more — it's about refreshing the spaces we spend the most time in.
It's one of my favourite little winter resets because it's simple, practical, and fits into a busy day.
CLEANING PASTE DIY
Here’s the recipe (which takes two seconds to make & costs under a $2!!). You can double this recipe if you need.
• 1 cup baking soda / bi carb
• 1 capful thieves cleaner
• 1/3 water
• 2 tablespoons thieves dish soap
• 10 drops each Thieves & Lemons EO
I like to reuse an empty Thieves Dish Soap bottle or you can buy one like this from Kmart.
Winter seems to bring blankets into every room of the house.
The couch gets more use, the throws get pulled out daily, and somehow everything starts to hold onto that "lived in" smell.
One thing I like to keep on hand is a simple linen spray with Thieves and Lavender.
My go-to mix:
• 100ml glass spray bottle
• 4 drops Thieves
• 4 drops Lavender
• filtered water
• optional: 1 tsp witch hazel
I use it on:
• couch cushions
• throw blankets
• fabric chairs
• bedrooms between sheet changes
It takes a few seconds, but it makes the whole space feel fresher and more looked after.
Especially during winter when windows aren't open as often and everything spends a bit more time indoors.
Winter laundry reset
Winter laundry has its own personality.
Clothes take longer to dry, towels seem to stay damp forever, and laundry baskets can start holding onto smells before you even realise it.
One little thing I do is tuck a cotton round with a few drops of Purification into the bottom of the laundry basket.
It's simple, but it helps keep things smelling fresher between loads, especially when the basket is filling up faster than it's emptying.
I replace it every week or so, depending on how much use the basket is getting.
It's one of those tiny jobs that takes less than a minute but makes the whole laundry area feel a bit more under control.
Steam mop upgrade
Is it just me, or do winter floors seem to get dirty about five minutes after you've cleaned them?
More shoes inside, wet mornings, sport, school runs... it all ends up on the floor.
One thing I do this time of year is add a small amount of Thieves Household Cleaner to my mop water.
It's a simple swap, but it leaves the floors feeling properly clean and the whole house smelling fresh afterwards.
I usually do it:
• after a busy week of school and sport
• before the weekend starts
• when the floors are making the whole house feel untidy
It's one of those jobs that never feels urgent, but once it's done, everything feels better.
Towel refresh
Cooler weather always changes the laundry situation a bit.
Towels take longer to dry, everything stays damp for longer, and suddenly clean washing doesn’t smell that clean anymore.
One thing that helps is adding:
• white vinegar to the rinse cycle
• a couple of drops of Lemon with the load
It helps freshen towels properly without needing to rewash everything three times.
I also try not to leave towels sitting in the machine too long once the cycle finishes because that seems to make everything worse very quickly.
Small change, but it makes a noticeable difference through winter.
